Higher HbA1c, Greater diabetes complications
Clinical Significance:
HbA1c reflects the proportion of hemoglobin molecules bound to glucose, representing the average plasma glucose concentration over the previous 8–12 weeks. It is considered the gold standard for diagnosis and long-term monitoring of diabetes mellitus. Unlike fasting glucose, it is not affected by short-term dietary or lifestyle changes.
Reference Ranges (may vary by lab):
Normal: <5.7%
Pre-diabetes: 5.7% – 6.4%
Diabetes: ≥6.5% (diagnostic, if confirmed)
Target in treated diabetics: <7.0% (as per ADA guidelines)
Indications:
Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Pre-diabetes
Monitoring glycemic control in diabetic patients
Assessing risk of microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy) and macrovascular (cardiac, vascular) complications
